Posted October 24, 2022

A Plymouth High School student won the recent Lakeland High School Math Meet, and a Panther team took second overall.

At the event, held Oct. 17 at Lakeland University, participants completed 16 questions as individuals, and six more questions with their teams.

PHS senior Nick Shircel was the top individual overall, with a score of 32 out of a possible 40 points. Other Panthers finishing in the top 10 were Marco Troka and Erynn Kletzien, each with a score of 24. Carson Schwartz received an honorable mention with a score of 22.

Nick, Marco, Erynn, and Carson were part of the top PHS team, along with Emmitt Huhn, Silas Dailey, Cora Steiner, and Forest Olsen. A second PHS team finished 14th out of the 30 teams.

“There was an extremely tight competition this year, with Sheboygan North winning, us taking second, and Kettle Moraine Lutheran taking third,” said team coach Jeremy Ross, a PHS math teacher. “North had a score of 203, we had 193, and KML had 187. That 10-point difference was the equivalent of getting one more question right on the team test. Talk about a close competition!”

This is the fourth time in a row that PHS has placed among the top two teams at the contest. PHS won in 2021 and had the individual winner, with a second team placing sixth. In 2019, PHS had the individual winner and teams that took first and fourth. PHS also won the 2018 meet and had two additional teams in the top 10.
