New PHS mural encourages students to be kind

Posted September 6, 2022

As Plymouth High School students returned to school today, they saw a completed mural featuring the “Be the Nice Kid” message in the hallway outside the PHS office.

The message was created by Bryan Skavnak, founder of Be the Nice Kid, an organization dedicated to spreading positivity and inspiration to kids, their parents, and their teachers.

The PHS mural is the work of 2021 PHS graduate Madison Meyer, who spent many hours on it this spring and summer.

The project came about after a community member told Principal Joe Brandl that the message should be displayed in the school. He mentioned it to Kay Tharp, an instructional leader for the district and longtime fan of the message, who knew Miss Meyer as a student.

“She used to help me get my room ready for fall and I would see her amazing penmanship displayed on my bulletin boards,” Mrs. Tharp said. “I approached Maddie to see if she was interested and she said yes! We are very grateful for her talent and willingness to share that talent with us.”

Mrs. Tharp hopes the message resonates with students. “‘Be the nice kid’ can't be said enough,” she said. “If we all took it upon ourselves to ‘be the nice kid,’ the world would be a much better place!”

Be the Nice Kid

Some kids are smarter than you.
Some kids have cooler clothes than you.
Some kids are better at sports than you.
It doesn’t matter.
You have your thing too.
Be the kid who can get along.
Be the kid who is generous.
Be the kid who is happy for other people.
Be the kid who does the right thing.
Be the nice kid.
