Two new members of the Plymouth High School Alumni Hall of Fame were announced June 4 during PHS Commencement Exercises.
Mr. Nicolaus has dedicated his life to serving the citizens of the Town and City of Plymouth, serving as a volunteer firefighter for 27 years, beginning in 1964 when he was 19 years old and continuing until 1997, when he became the city's first full-time paid chief. He served in that position until his retirement in 2015. He also served as an EMT, fire inspector, and HazMat Team member, and led the effort to build the current fire station.
“Over his 51 years in the fire service, Ron has served as an exemplary volunteer, leader, teacher, friend, and role model,” wrote friend and coworker Shirley Gilliam in nominating him. “Ron's efforts in growing the department and providing exceptional service to our community will never be forgotten. He will always be highly respected and honored for his tireless mentoring of the members and individuals who were blessed to know him and those who had the opportunity to work alongside him.”
Mrs. Krueger has been a physical education teacher and coach in the Plymouth School District for 35 years, president of WEAC, and a contributing member of the district Health and Wellness Committee. She has coached middle-school volleyball, basketball, and track, and designed an after-school program to give Riverview Middle School students additional opportunities to stay active, grow, and have fun. She also has been a driving force behind the Plymouth Aquatic Center, serving as director since it opened in 2004.
“The physical education curriculum at Riverview and within the Plymouth School District offers as many opportunities for student involvement as any, and Gina has been a big part of this,” five colleagues wrote in nominating her. “Her countless contributions and forward thinking have helped the Plymouth District's physical education programs grow and
prosper.”
The Hall of Fame was created by the PHS Student Council in 2010 to recognize distinguished alumni who have made a difference, achieved a high level of success, exhibited leadership qualities, and served their community.
New candidates, who must have graduated from PHS at least 10 years ago, may be nominated annually in the spring. The nominations then are reviewed by Student Council members, with the honorees revealed at Graduation in June and inducted at Homecoming in the fall.
