Plymouth High School adds therapy dog

Plymouth High School students stressing over recent final exams could turn to a furry new face for comfort: Howard the therapy dog.
Students interacted with Howard during breaks between finals Jan. 15-16. He also visited classrooms before, during, or after testing, as requested by teachers.
The 8-year-old wire-haired fox terrier elicits many smiles – and not just from students. “Howard helps staff members too,” said PHS counselor Erik West. “Everyone just gets excited to see a dog. It’s that hit of positivity.”
Mr. West’s family rescued Howard about 7 years ago, and noticed that he seemed well suited to be a therapy dog. “He is very laid back,” Mr. West said. “His temperament is perfect. He’s a relaxed, chill dog.”
Howard completed the Therapy Dog Training Course at Central Bark in Sheboygan in the fall, then received his Therapy Dog Certification through Therapy Dog International in December.
As part of his training, Howard visited PHS many times and experienced hallways, classrooms, the library, small groups, individual meetings, and PEP Talks with students and parents.
Research shows that therapy dogs can help reduce stress, boost morale, provide emotional support, encourage positive behaviors, and create a calmer, more connected school environment.
Above all, Howard offers a comforting and non-judgmental presence to help students feel safe and secure, Mr. West said. “He’s so calming, in a therapeutic way, to help with coping,” he said.
Mr. West plans to set a schedule for Howard beginning in the fall. In the meantime, the pup will be on hand for finals, ACT testing, and parent-teacher conferences, and can be brought in upon request and in response to a crises.
Howard interacts with students only in controlled and supervised settings, and participation is entirely optional. Parents or students who have allergies, phobias, or other concerns regarding dogs are urged to contact Mr. West at ewest@plymouth.k12.wi.us or 920-892-5092 so that accommodations can be made.
