PHS to present “Our Town” as fall play

Posted October 20, 2024

The Plymouth High School Drama Department is presenting “Our Town,” the simple story of a love affair constantly rediscovered because it asks timeless questions about the meaning of love, life, and death.

Written in 1938 by Thornton Wilder, “Our Town” explores the relationship between two young neighbors, George Gibbs and Emily Webb, whose childhood friendship blossoms into romance, and then culminates in marriage. When Emily loses her life in childbirth, the circle of life portrayed in each of the three acts – growing up, adulthood, and death – is fully realized.

Wilder envisioned chairs on a bare stage as the backdrop for this exploration of universal human experiences. PHS cast members painted the chairs they are using during the show to represent their own likes and interests, and what makes them and/or their characters human.

The PHS production is directed by drama teacher Jack Colombo, with Scott Bunyea as tech director and Kay Magnus as costume designer.

Performances will begin at 7 p.m. nightly from Thursday Oct. 30 through Saturday Nov. 1, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday Nov. 2, in the school auditorium, 125 S. Highland Ave. General-admission tickets are $10 and are available from 6:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays in the PHS Office (enter Door 1G), as well as at the door.
