PHS Choirs on the Carnegie Hall stage

PHS Choirs perform at Nationals in New York City

Posted April 3, 2023

Plymouth High School Choirs excelled at a choral festival at Queens College and performed on the Carnegie Hall stage during a recent trip to New York City.

At the choral festival, students performed three songs: “Let the River Run” by Craig Hella Johnson, “Salmo 150” by Ernani Aguilar, and “Unclouded Day” by Shawn Kirchner. They were evaluated on vocal technique, diction, technical preparation, and musical effect and scored 21-23 out of 25 points in every category for a total of 88/100 from one judge and a 91/100 from another.

Also during the trip, held March 22-26, students participated in a one-hour clinic with renowned choral conductor Jason Max Ferdinad and a Broadway 101 workshop with the former lead of "The Book of Mormon."

At Carnegie Hall, they performed three songs with 250 students from other invited choirs, the only Wisconsin representative at the event.  This massed choir worked under renowned choral composer and conductor Andre Thomas.

PHS received a spotlight moment alone, singing “Let the River Run” by Craig Hella Johnson under the direction of PHS choral director Amanda Smith and accompanied by PHS choral assistant Zach Holden.

Finally, 800 students in three massed choirs joined together to sing the world premiere of “Song of Revolution,” composed and conducted by Rollo Dilworth.  This piece was commissioned specifically for the festival, and performed publicly for the first time at it.

“Chaperones said it gave them goosebumps,” Mrs. Smith said. “To sing on that stage, work with these composers, and premiere a song is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Students also had time to see New York sights, including Radio City Music Hall, Top of the Rock, the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial, and the Broadway show “Moulin Rogue!”
