Plymouth School District students are participating in a special “America at 250: Our Stories Through Art” exhibit opening this month at the Plymouth Arts Center!

“We hope this exhibition will serve as a joyful and inspiring celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, told through the creativity and imagination of our students,” said Lizabeth Higgins, education coordinator for the Plymouth Arts Center.

The exhibit will feature about 30 artworks from Plymouth High School students and 6 from Riverview Middle School students, as well as a collaborative piece from each public elementary school. Other area schools also are participating, as are homeschooled students and adult art students.

Students at all grade levels were invited to contribute artwork that reflects what it means to be American — from personal experiences and family traditions to memorable places, trips, and landmarks. Acceptable media include drawing, painting, mixed media, collage, digital art, photography, and sculpture.

The exhibit aims to bring together students, families, and community members in a shared artistic expression of our nation’s journey. “This is a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their artwork in a professional gallery setting and engage with the local art community,” Ms. Higgins said.

“America at 250: Our Stories Through Art” is sponsored by Franz Backus and Eveyln Owen.

Students, teachers, families, and the public are invited to a free opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday Jan. 16, with complimentary appetizers and desserts and a cash bar. Jazz pianist Blue Louis will provide musical entertainment.

The exhibit will be on display through Friday Feb. 27 in Gallery 110 North at Plymouth Arts Center, 520 E. Mill St.
