PHS to present “Play That Goes Wrong”
The Plymouth High School Drama Department is presenting “The Play That Goes Wrong: High School Edition,” a hilarious comedy about an amateur theater group struggling through a disastrous opening night.
Performances will begin at 7 p.m. nightly from Thursday Nov. 5 through Saturday Nov. 7, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday Nov. 8, in the school auditorium, 125 S. Highland Ave. Reserved-seating tickets are $11, available only online via GoFan.
The PHS production is directed by drama teacher Jack Colombo, with Scott Bunyea as tech director and Emily Golabiewski as costume designer. The set is on loan from Sheboygan Theatre Company, which performed the play in February.
About the play
It is opening night of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’s production of the 1920s mystery “The Murder at Haversham Manor.” The thespians have seen success with previous plays, and the time has come to present this show – a play similar to Agatha Christie’s’ “The Mousetrap” – whether they’re ready or not.
Director Chris Bean welcomes the audience excitedly, while the company is frantically making last-minute changes to the set. They don’t have time to finish, but the play must go on!
Character Charles Haversham is killed on cue, and the murder mystery plot begins to progress, but not very smoothly. Enter Jonathan, who trips on his entrance. Then Thomas and Perkins try to enter, but the door is stuck shut.
A plethora of calamities ensue, including disappearing props, missing actors, collapsing sets, forgotten and entirely flubbed lines, and more. Throughout the mishaps and chaos onstage and backstage, Inspector Carter tries to conduct an investigation into the death.
But the more the play progresses, the worse the acting gets. What will be the big climax: the reveal of the murderer or how this acting troupe survives the performance?
