Community nourishing classes begin soon

Plymouth School District Community Education & Recreation is offering a Plant Foraging Tour, Canning 101, and a new Homemade Crackers class this summer!

Homemade Crackers - NEW

Crackers make a great snack, round out a meal and can often be made with simple ingredients you already have on hand. Come learn how to make two simple cracker recipes during this hands-on baking session. Featuring both a wheat based cracker recipe and a gluten free seed cracker, you'll leave with two recipes that will become a staple in your kitchen, basic skills to make these simple snacks along with some crackers to share with family and friends.

Wild Food/Wild Medicine Plant Foraging Tour

Explore the plants of summer to get a glimpse into the cycles of nature and the abundance that prevails. Learn to identify plants in various stages, regenerative harvesting practices, and how to prepare plants for food and medicine.
Instructor: Linda Conroy, herbalist & forager for 30 years
Details: 5:30-7:30pm Thursday July 23 at the main entrance to Nichols Creek Wildlife Area
Fee: $32 through July 16, then $42

Canning 101

Come learn how you can fill your pantry with safely home-canned goods.  Try your hand at making some dilly beans, learn about safe preservation, review food safety, the canning process (both water bath and pressure canning), the science of pickling, and so much more! Class participants will each leave with a jar of dilly beans, recipes and informational handouts.

How do I register?

  • Online: If possible, please register online via MyRec. There is no fee for registering online, though our credit-card processer assesses a fee for online payments. You can avoid the fee by selecting “Print a pre-registration form” for your Checkout Method, and then mailing a check or paying in person with cash or check. Please note that your spot is not reserved until we receive payment.
  • In person: You can register in our office, where we will help set up your MyRec account and can accept credit cards (for a fee), checks, and cash. Park in the visitor lot in front of Plymouth High School, 125 S. Highland Ave., and enter Door 18 on the south end of the building. Our office is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays (except closing at noon Fridays June 12-Aug. 21).
  • By mail: While MyRec registration is preferred, you still can print a registration form to mail with a check to Community Ed & Rec, 125 S. Highland Ave., Plymouth WI 53073.
