PHS inducts 49 into National Honor Society
Posted April 27, 2026
The Plymouth High School chapter of the National Honor Society held its 90th annual induction ceremony April 22 in the school auditorium.
The chapter inducted 49 new students and re-elected 38 seniors. New members must have at least a 3.7 grade-point average over five semesters and complete a portfolio, which is reviewed by a faculty council. Each member is expected to do 15 hours of service a year.
During the ceremony, PHS Principal Joe Brandl outlined the four key principles of NHS – scholarship, leadership, service, and character – and later formally accepted the new inductees.
PHS activities director Kevin Butters, chosen by NHS members as their guest speaker, told students that the NHS principles are pillars for the foundation of the rest of their lives.
- Scholarship: “Being a lifelong learner means you are willing to challenge yourself, stay disciplined, and be curious about the world around you. It also requires humility — the understanding that you don’t know everything and there is always more to learn.”
- Leadership: “Being loud or having a title doesn’t make you a leader. True leaders use their strengths to guide, support, and inspire others. They step up when needed, lift people up, and make tough decisions — even when it means standing alone.”
- Character: “Character isn’t built in moments of comfort. It’s waking up early when you don’t want to, holding yourself accountable when it would be easier not to, and refusing to settle for anything less than your best.”
- Service: “Service is not always immediately rewarding or visible. This growth takes time, patience, and consistency. The last thing to grow on a tree is the fruit. … Stay the course, keep giving, and trust that the fruit of your efforts will come in time.”
Mr. Butters reminded students that NHS induction is not the end of a process, but the beginning of a responsibility. “As life continues to bring challenges, changes, and opportunities, remember not to fight the wave — surf it,” he said. “A lot will happen in your life, but instead of resisting it, embrace it, learn from it, and grow with it.”
National Honor Society was established in 1921, and the PHS chapter was founded in 1936. This year’s ceremony was conducted by NHS officers President Ashley Miller, Vice-President Brennan Nickel, Secretary Alaina Arnold, and Treasurer Kalli Knowles. PHS math teacher Jack Daniels serves as NHS advisor.
