Posted January 29, 2024

The deadline is approaching for Plymouth High School seniors to apply for dozens of local scholarships, including four new ones.

PHS students can apply for 62 scholarships with one form, the Local Scholarship Profile and Application. Completed applications are due by 3 p.m. Friday Feb. 9 to the PHS Counseling Department.

New this year is a separate Class Exemplar Application, also due at 3 p.m. Friday Feb. 9. This opportunity is open to seniors with a ranking of cum laude or higher, who have exceptional soft skills and no athletic or school code violations, and who have participated in at least 10 extracurricular activities. The senior chosen by a faculty committee as class exemplar will deliver a commencement address and receive the Rhyan Family Class Exemplar Scholarship.

Seniors also should note that applications are due by 3 p.m. Wednesday April 10 for the Vogt Scholarship, available to all PHS graduates who have earned a 3.0 or higher GPA (based on 7 semesters) and who have participated in 10 approved extracurricular activities.

More than $1.6 million in scholarships was awarded to members of the PHS Class of 2023. The 2024 awards will be announced May 15 at the annual PHS Scholarship Awards Night.

Foundation scholarships

For 35 years, the Plymouth Education Foundation has supported the community's value on continuing education with its Scholarship Program. The foundation has administered more than $500,000 in merit and need-based scholarships to students planning to attend four-year universities and two-year technical colleges.

This year, approximately 45 PHS graduating seniors will receive foundation-administered scholarships. Scholarship recipients show a commitment to their education, a sincere desire to serve others, and/or the ability to overcome challenges in an effort to reach personal goals.

New scholarships include:

  • Gale and Renae Grahn Family Scholarship: Open to PHS graduates who will attend a 2- or 4-year institute of higher learning and are pursuing a degree in education or nursing.
  • Kees Inc. Scholarship: Open to PHS graduates who will attend a Wisconsin technical college or University of Wisconsin campus and are pursuing a degree or certificate with a manufacturing focus.
  • Peter Talen Memorial Scholarship: Open to PHS graduates who have been in theater all four years of high school and are pursuing a degree in fine arts, with preference to someone pursuing an artistic life. Funded by donations from the Class of 2003.
  • Plymouth Firefighters Association Inc. Scholarship: Open to Plymouth High School graduates with a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.00 scale or its equivalent who have competed in at least one high school athletic sport and/or PHS extracurricular activity in all four years and has demonstrated leadership while as a student; with preference to someone who has participated in the Plymouth Fire Department’s Cadet program or whose parent is currently serving as a firefighter or EMT.

The foundation makes it easy for individuals, businesses, and organizations to sponsor a scholarship. Sponsors set the criteria, and the foundation's scholarships committee selects the recipient on the donor's behalf.  Donors are recognized at PHS Scholarship Awards Night and have the opportunity to present the scholarship in person. The foundation is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are tax deductible.
