Colombian students spend week in Plymouth

Posted January 29, 2024

Plymouth High School recently hosted seven students and two teachers from Colombia as part of an enriching cultural exchange program.

“This visit not only provides an excellent opportunity for our students to interact with peers from another country, but it also allows our Colombian guests to gain valuable insights into the American education system,” said PHS Spanish teacher Rommy Herrera.

The visitors are from Gimnasio La Colina in Cali, a city of 2.5 million people. Students and teachers stayed with host families while in Plymouth to experience American education and immerse themselves in the high school culture. They ate at the Plymouth Cheese Counter and at Culver’s.

The visit from Jan. 15 to 21 coincided with the recent artic blast, and the Colombians were excited to see snow for the first time.

Another highlight was a musical presentation for PHS students and staff given twice Jan. 19 in the school auditorium. The show featured singing and dancing to enhance a storyline about a girl from the United States who visits Colombia, and meets a boy who agrees to be her tour guide – and eventually her husband.

Plymouth last visited Colombia in June 2010, and is planning a return visit.

“We believe that this cultural exchange will foster cross-cultural understanding and create lasting connections between our students and theirs,” Profe Herrera said.
