Middle-school Wrestling & Lifting begin soon

Posted January 8, 2024

Area middle-school students, including those who are homeschooled or attending parochial schools, are invited to participate in Wrestling and Lifting this winter.

Wrestling

Students in grades 5-8 are invited to join the Riverview Wrestling team, which competes against area middle schools.

Students must be registered online via MyRec by Jan. 21. (Parents/guardians will need to create a MyRec account, if they do not already have one.) In addition, all participants must have a Physical Evaluation Form on file signed by a doctor after March 31, 2022. Fee is $20; please contact Community Ed & Rec if financial assistance is needed.

Practices will be 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 23 to Feb. 20 at Plymouth High School, then 3:15-4:45 p.m. from Feb. 27 to March 6. Meets are mostly on Mondays from Feb. 19 to March 11.

Lifting

This free program for grades 7-8 is modeled after the training received by Plymouth High School athletes. Participants learn the basics of athletic-based fitness training and develop speed, explosiveness, agility, strength, and conditioning.

Lifting will meet 2:45-4 p.m. Mondays/Wednesdays or Tuesdays/Thursdays from Jan. 22 to Feb. 29 in the fitness center at Riverview, 300 Riverside Circle. Students must have a pre-arranged ride home and be picked up no later than 4:15 p.m., or they can purchase a Youth Center membership and stay there until 5 p.m.

The class is free, but students must be registered online via MyRec by Jan. 21. (Parents/guardians will need to create a MyRec account, if they do not already have one.) Space is limited, so register as soon as possible.

Students who successfully complete the Lifting program and pass a free-weight safety test can work out independently in the PHS Fitness Center, once they are registered for a free middle-school membership. (Other middle-school students may use the facility if they have a free membership and are accompanied by a parent/guardian.)
