Schools in the Plymouth School District held Veterans Day observances Nov. 10 to honor those who have served our country.
Plymouth High School students and staff gathered in the school auditorium for the annual Veterans Day program, which opened with Principal Joe Brandl explaining the history of Veterans Day and a color guard from VFW Post 5612 presenting colors.
The PHS Wind Ensemble played the National Anthem, then combined with the PHS Concert Choir for “Armed Forces - The Pride of America.” Students in the Public Address class provided a program, which honored veteran John Bohnhoff.
The color guard then presented a rifle salute in front of the school, followed by PHS students Tayla Weisensel and Nehl Kremer playing Echo Taps in the auditorium lobby.
Riverview held an assembly in the auditorium with many veterans in attendance, including Arlan Schlundt, a Korean War Veteran, who spoke to students. The Riverview Band performed on stage.
Fairview opened its assembly in the gym with a welcome by Principal Nick O’Malley, the Pledge of Allegience, and the National Anthem. A group of students from grades three and four then explained the significance of the day, followed by third-graders singing “My Country, ’Tis of Thee.” After a moment of silence, students shared a poem about veterans. Fairview also put together a slideshow featuring veterans connected to Fairview families.
Horizon gathered around its flagpole with members of American Legion Post 243 to hear remarks by Principal Chris Helmer, before reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the National Anthem. Student speakers then shared information about Veterans Day.
Parkview gathered around its flagpole with members of the American Legion. After opening remarks by Principal Todd Hunt, veterans led students in the Pledge of Allegiance. Fourth-graders then spoke about the meaning of Veterans Day. Taps followed a moment of silence.
