Horizon School hosting chess workshop

Posted February 26, 2024

Horizon Elementary School is hosting a Super Saturday Chess Workshop open to all area students in grades 2-8.

The workshop, conducted by the Wisconsin Scholastic Chess Federation, will combine chess instruction with a chess tournament, giving players the chance to earn a trophy or medal while learning game basics between rounds.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday March 2 at Horizon, located at 411 S. Highland Ave. Register online; fee is $20 per child. Coaches and parents are invited to attend free for part or all of the day to help or learn alongside their children. Participants should bring a snack, a lunch, and a water bottle.

Horizon recently launched an after-school Chess Club for its students in grades 2-4, which is advised by Celeste Godsey, who noted, “This fun game has proven to raise reading and math scores, and develops the brain for problem solving and a positive attitude about learning.”
