Generations Intergenerational Center has launched a new initiative with Fairview Elementary School called PLAY (Promoting Lifelong Activity for our Youth) with Generations!
PLAY with Generations is a unique recess program that fosters activity, mentorship, and fun. Volunteers engage with students in grades 5K-4 on the playground, leading structured games that encourage teamwork while creating meaningful intergenerational interactions.
“The kids have loved having them here and are excited about playing the games that they bring,” said Fairview Principal Nick O’Malley.
Goals of the program are:
“This program isn’t just about recess — it’s about building bridges across generations,” said Joa Cain, community engagement and program manager for Generations. “It’s an opportunity for volunteers to make a real impact in the lives of children while also staying active and engaged themselves.”
Volunteers currently are at the school from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, which allows time for orientation, recess activities, and a short debrief. Organizers hope eventually to expand the program to additional days of the week and potentially to more schools.
Those interested in volunteering can contact Ms. Cain at jcain@generationsic.org. Those interested in providing financial support for the initiative can contact Greg Voss at gvoss@generationsic.org.
Volunteers receive a background check, training, guidance, and equipment to ensure a positive experience for students as well as and volunteers.
