Riverview Middle School students participate in last year’s lifting program in the school fitness center. An expanded middle-school Intramural Lifting program begins Nov. 28.

Registration open for middle-school Intramural Lifting

Middle-school students are encouraged to participate in the free Riverview Intramural Lifting program.

The program is open to area students in grades 7 and 8, including those who are homeschooled or attending parochial schools. It models training that athletes participate in at the high-school level, according to Christian Vollbrecht, Riverview physical education teacher and a Plymouth High School assistant football coach.

“These sessions will help students learn the basics of athletic-based fitness training and help develop their speed, explosiveness, agility, strength, and conditioning,” he said.

Students who successfully complete the program will be allowed to work out independently in the fitness center at Plymouth High School, once they are registered for a free membership. (Other district middle-school students may use the facility if accompanied by a parent/guardian).

Intramural Lifting will meet from 2:45 to 4:10 p.m. school days from Nov. 28 through Jan. 5 in the fitness center at Riverview, 300 Riverside Circle. Participants choose either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. Students must have a pre-arranged ride home and be picked up no later than 4:15 p.m.

In order to participate, students must be registered via the MyRec online registration system; space is limited, so parents/guardians are encouraged to complete registration as soon as possible.

NOTE: A second session of Intramural Lifting will run from Jan. 17 to Feb. 23.
