Foundation awards 3rd Spirit of Innovation Award

Posted November 15, 2021

The Plymouth Education Foundation recently awarded its Spirit of Innovation, Leadership, and Service Award to Riverview teacher Tyler Gruett.

This award was created to recognize an outstanding community member, teacher, staff member, student, or civic organization who has been a supporter of the Plymouth School District and believes in a quality school system and promotes initiatives that enhance the educational model at both the student level and for the community at large.

Mr. Gruett, who has been with the district since August 2013, teaches sixth grade and also serves in the leadership role of technology organizer for differentiated learning. He was recognized for helping to build the learning capacity of staff, students, and parents.

“Tyler took the initiative to pilot Google Classroom at Riverview a few years ago,” the foundation noted in making the announcement. “He provided the staff training, resources, and support to make it a success. From there it spread to the other schools in the district.”

When Covid-19 led to the closure of schools, Mr. Gruett continued to support his co-workers and students. At the beginning of the summer of 2020, he joined staff members helping prepare for the unknowns of the upcoming school year.

“Tyler is methodical in his process of teaching how to effectively use technology,” the foundation noted. “He created videos, step-by-step visuals, workshops, and was always responsive to requests for help.”

In addition to a toolbox of resources, Mr. Gruett also helped determine the structure for district-wide use of Google Classroom, to address the concerns of parents and students who found it confusing to have different processes from teacher to teacher.

“Your leadership and collaboration with your fellow staff members to implement Google Classroom and provide support makes you an invaluable member of the Plymouth School District staff and very deserving of the Spirit of Innovation, Leadership and Service Award,” the foundation concluded.

The award was presented in 2016 to Board of Education president Mark Rhyan, and again in 2018 to Plymouth High School Spanish teacher Laura Koebel.
