The Vielbaum-Bodwin family learned of the location of their new home-to-be in dramatic fashion.
Habitat for Humanity Lakeside is building a house for the family, whose children attend Horizon Elementary School.
They were instructed to check their email at 3:45 p.m. Oct. 21, and to drive to a particular location at 4:15 p.m.
When they arrived at the corner of Prospect Avenue and Appleton Street, a Johnson Bus school bus blocking their view responded to calls to “Move that bus!” Behind the bus were teachers and staff from Horizon Elementary School and other supporters.
This is the second Habitat home built for a Horizon family. The first came about during the 2016-17 school year, as PHS was looking for ways for students to gain construction experience and Habitat was looking for a Plymouth project.
PHS students in the Service Learning and Construction classes worked on the house alongside their teachers, the Habitat construction manager, and retired tradesmen who volunteered. The district is hoping that PHS students can be involved in the new project as well.
Vielbaum-Bodwin family members will put in many hours helping build the new house (and others), in exchange for a zero-interest mortgage to be paid in full by the new homeowner.
Anyone interested in helping can visit the volunteer page on Habitat's website at www.habitatlakeside.com or call volunteer services at (920) 458-3399.
