Congratulations to these Plymouth High School students on their recent recognitions!
A team of culinary arts students from Plymouth High School placed second among 18 teams at the State ProStart Competition held March 10 at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee.
The Panther team of Liam Fintak, Kristy Pelletier, Lukas Sternard, and Greg Even have been preparing for the competition since December, along with PHS graduate Cody Jensen, a professional chef coach.
The students received positive compliments from judges known to be extremely strict in the judging criteria, said PHS culinary arts teacher Connie Lund. Students were judged on: mise en place, cooking techniques, knife skills, sanitation, teamwork, communication, clean-up, costing, menu design, and how each dish looks and tastes.
PHS took third at the 2020 East Central Conference Academic Bowl competition, held March 10.
The eight ECC schools participate in the annual competition, which began in 2014-15 when the WIAA conferences were restructured. Each 20-member team is challenged in the topics of science, English, math, social studies and current events, in a written test and a group question-and-answer round.
In addition to a third-place finish, the Panthers earned 9 individual medals:
In addition, the Math team took first for the oral phase of the competition, and the Current Events team also took first place.
Members of the teams are:
Three members of the Social Studies team – Adam Niver, Isaac Gonsales and Sam Scheele – were absent and replaced by alternates willing to step in.
To be a part of the Academic Bowl team, students must complete a short application with transcripts and endorsements by three faculty members. PHS teachers Carrie Pieper and Meredith Herrera, advisers for the team, then select those who would be strongest in each category, keeping a short list of alternates.
