The Plymouth Education Foundation has honored Plymouth High School teacher Laura Koebel with its Spirit of Innovation, Leadership and Service Award.
“Tonight’s recipient understands that a vibrant and diverse school system benefits not only the students, but also the community as a whole,” President Karen Rhyan said in announcing the award Nov. 9 at the foundation’s Party with a Purpose fundraiser.
Mrs. Koebel, language teacher and champion of global studies, is a leader in the student languages curriculum; organizes international student language and service trips; facilitates exchange programs with Columbian and Thai students and educators; advises WeAct, a local and global student service club; supports students at all levels in applying for global scholarships; and mentors AFS exchange students.
One of her many flagship initiatives is the Global Education Achievement Certificate, which was subsequently adopted by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
“She believes all students deserve an educational environment where they can strive to be their personal best,” Mrs. Rhyan said. “She has tirelessly worked to invent and champion global opportunities for both students of Plymouth and the community at large.”
The Spirit of Innovation, Leadership and Service Award is given every other year to an outstanding community member, student, teacher, alumni or civic organization. The recipient must meet the award criteria, which includes:
