Riverview presents ‘Shrek Jr.’

Posted October 29, 2018

Riverview Middle School will present “Shrek Jr.” as its annual musical Nov. 9 to 11, featuring students in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades.

Everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, “Shrek Jr.” is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.

The musical is based on the Oscar-winning motion picture from DreamWorks Animation and the book by William Steig of the same name. The score includes “I’m A Believer” by Neil Diamond.

As the story goes, an ogre named Shrek lived in a faraway swamp. One day, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast out by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he's handed a task – if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn't be complete without a few twists and turns along the way.

Performances will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 and Saturday, Nov. 10, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11 in the Riverview Auditorium, 300 Riverside Circle, Plymouth. General admission tickets are $5 and are available in the school office and at the door.

Riverview’s production is directed by Roy Schwab, Sanora Stout and Sara Stout. The book and lyrics are by David Lindsay-Abaire, and the music by Jeanine Tesori. “Shrek Jr.” originally was produced on Broadway by DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions.
