Community Engagement Pillar:

Schools launch new online calendar

Posted January 15, 2018

The Plymouth School District has introduced a new scheduling and events calendar, designed to make it easier for community members to use school facilities.

The calendar is powered by rSchools, which has provided PHS athletic schedules for many years. It replaced a set of Google calendars and is designed to be easier for families to isolate events of interest to them.

The calendar is connected to a new facility management system, which allows those wishing to use district facilities to see what is available and to make their own reservation requests. The new calendar is managed by Community Education & Recreation, which coordinates public use of district facilities.

To simplify life for residents, the same calendar system eventually is expected to coordinate use of City of Plymouth facilities. The schools calendar, which launched in the fall, was called for by the Community Engagement Pillar of Excellence strategic plan.

The Board of Education has established four Pillars of Excellence – Academic Excellence, Extracurriculars, Community Engagement, and Financial Responsibility – as key principles that distinguish the district and advance its mission. Each Pillar has a strategic plan that identifies desired Future States and initiatives for the next three years.

The overarching goal of the Community Engagement Pillar is to increase energy, pride, awareness, connection, and involvement. The desired Future States are:

  • All community members, alumni and staff know and understand the PSD strategic plan.
  • Students and staff at all grade levels and subject areas experience a connection to the community.
  • All buildings and grounds of the Plymouth School District are utilized for community purposes every day outside of school hours.
  • The Plymouth School District works with other organizations and entities in the community collaboratively toward common goals.
  • Plymouth is recognized as a stellar place in which to live, learn and prosper.

To move closer to those Future States, the 2017-18 Community Engagement strategies include:

  • Presentation of the Strategic Plan will take place with all key groups in the community.
  • Development of a long-range communication and marketing plan.
  • On-going education for parents about the strategic plans.
  • Continued increase of volunteers in all buildings.
  • Having administrators build partnerships between community organizations and building initiatives.
  • Assessment of current usage and define underused areas of facilities as well as areas of need.
  • Launching the on-line facility management system throughout the Plymouth community.
  • Educating all designated staff in customer service techniques.
  • Promotion of the usage of district buildings, including anniversary celebrations and new Community Education & Recreation opportunities.
  • Working with community groups to develop a community "hub."
  • Participation and partnership with additional five city, chamber or other organization initiatives.
  • Implementation of the next steps for Born to Succeed.
  • Research of programs to utilize staff retirees, volunteers and alumni.
  • Development of a Community Ed & Rec video.
  • Increased use of social media and a new e-newsletter.
