Riverview launches intramurals for grades 5-6

Posted October 16, 2017

Riverview Middle School is starting a free after-school intramurals program for students of all skill levels in grades five and six.

Registration is due Thursday, Oct. 26 for Awesome Intramurals, which will begin in November. Boys and girls can participate in volleyball or basketball or both during this first session.

Intramurals will be offered from 2:45 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Riverview gym. Volleyball will run from Nov. 2 to 21, and basketball from Nov. 28 to Dec. 14. Parents/guardians can pick up children at school or give permission for them to walk home or to the Youth Center (if they are a member there).

Registration materials, including a concussion form and emergency contact information, should be returned by Thursday, Oct. 26 to Gina Krueger, Riverview physical education teacher and coordinator of the intramurals program.

Awesome Intramurals is part of an effort by the Plymouth School District to make more extracurriculars available to younger students. Those in grades five and six already could be on the Riverview wrestling and cross country teams, which are coordinated by Community Education & Recreation, but only those in grades seven and eight can participate in basketball, track and volleyball.

The intramural program will provide students with a variety of interesting, diverse, and challenging activities to accommodate different levels of skill and interests. The main intent is for students to enjoy learning about the activities, without pressure to compete and win. Students can enjoy the benefits of movement, develop positive attitudes, increase self-esteem, engage in positive social interactions, and broaden their skill, fitness and leisure choices.

A second session of intramurals is being planning for January and February, which would include floor hockey; and a third session for March and April, which might feature soccer, flag football, and dance team.
