Looking back at PHS in 1987

Posted August 21, 2017

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the graduation of the Plymouth High School Class of 1987, which is having its class reunion Aug. 26.

Here is a look back at their senior year:

  • Homecoming included hall-decorating, dress-up days, a pep rally, a parade, the Friday night football game (PHS beat Sheboygan Falls 22-6), and a dance.
  • Staff members included math teacher Mike Briggs, business teacher June Evenson (Winkel), science teacher Jay Grosshuesch, and custodian Bob Mueller.
  • PHS hosted five foreign-exchange students, from West Germany, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Switzerland, and Spain.
  • Mulberry Bush Child Care opened in Rooms B225 and B227 to care for children ages 2 to 12. The center initially was operated in conjunction with the PHS Human Growth classes, and allowed students in the Child Development class to gain experience with young children.
  • Girls tennis (for the fifth consecutive year), girls basketball (undefeated for eight years in a row), boys basketball, girls swimming, and boys swimming all won conference titles. PHS had a soccer team for the first time.
  • Performing opportunities included Cabaret, Girls’ Chorus, Swing Choir, Mixed Chorus, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and German Band. The All-School Play was “The Face on the Barroom Floor,” and One-Act advanced to State with “Adaptations.”
  • Extracurriculars included Quit Qui Oc yearbook, Hi-Lights newspaper, Debate, Forensics, Home Economics Related Occupations, FFA, Future Business Leaders of America, Future Teachers of America, Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, ICE language club, Student Council, Students Against Driving Drunk, Library Club, Pep Club, Art Club, Letter Club, Lighting Crew, Seniors Helping Seniors, Future Problem Solving Team, and Key Club.
