Parkview Elementary School recently enjoyed kale grown in school gardens and launched a food waste composting project.
The composting effort came about after third-graders taught by Sarah Lee and Sarah Desiderio used their STEAM time to research and plan a project to compost food waste from the morning snack and from lunch. The waste was composted on school grounds near the Parkview gardens.
In addition, staff and students harvested the first crop of kale from the gardens, and students sampled it during lunch. “Many were surprised how much they enjoyed the green treat,” Mrs. Desiderio said.
