LTC offering gardening classes at PHS

Lakeshore Technical College is offering several agriculture and gardening classes at Plymouth High School this winter.

The following classes will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. in the LTC-Plymouth Science and Technology Center at the school, located at 125 Highland Ave.:

  • Starting from Seed to Kickstart Your Garden: Learn about plants to start as seeds indoors to kickstart the growing season. This class will cover starting vegetables, herbs and flowers and will include instruction on equipment needed, germination, caring for seedlings, watering and how and when to plant outdoors. Class 25952 will meet Wednesday, March 1; fee is $17.54 ($4.50 for those ages 62 and up).
  • Perennial Planting: Prepare to incorporate perennial plantings into your yard and garden design, including selecting plants, preparing beds, and caring for hardy perennials. Class 25953 will meet Tuesday, March 7; fee is $17.54 (seniors $4.50).
  • Butterfly and Bee Garden: Explore how to attract butterflies and bees to your garden or flower bed. Class will discuss the kinds of annuals and perennials and what seeds to plant to attract creatures. Participants will leave with a plant list and a bee and butterfly gardening manual. Class 25957 will meet Wednesday, April 12; fee is $17.54 (seniors $4.50).
  • Rose Garden Design: Design a rose garden as you cover the topics of picking the best site, planting, pruning, rose types and varieties, annual care and dealing with disease. Class 25959 will meet Monday, April 24; fee is $17.54 (seniors $4.50).

Also available is a Safety in Agriculture seminar, designed to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and employee safety. This course is especially relevant to farm owners, operators, supervisors, human resources, and employees who have responsibility over or interest in the safety and well-being of employees. Participants will explore basic OSHA record-keeping requirements, common citation hazards and how to minimize or eliminate exposure, an overview of common standards that apply to agricultural operations, and how to be better prepared for an OSHA inspection. Class 21644 will meet with Ben Nickel, LTC safety and rescue instructor, from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 11 in PHS Room C118; fee is $89.
