Fitness, aquatic classes offered

Plymouth School District Community Education and Recreation is offering a variety of fitness and aquatic classes this winter, as well as a special deal on the Community Fitness Center.

Those who join the Fitness Center by Jan. 20 will save 10 percent on the annual membership fee – and get half-price fitness and aquatic classes for the year. Discounted rates are $189 for an individual, $283 for a couple, $113 for district residents ages 62 and up, and $189 for a senior couple.

The supervised Fitness Center, located at Plymouth High School, 125 Highland Ave., features circuit training, free weights, bicycles, stair steppers, treadmills and elliptical machines.

The following fitness classes will meet from Jan. 9 to April 28 (unless otherwise noted) at Riverview Middle School, 300 Riverside Drive, unless otherwise noted:

  • Core Training: Fitness Level 1. This is a great beginner class but also can benefit the most experienced participant. Good for those looking specifically at core strength or a low-impact course to get started. Uses stability, Bosu & medicine balls plus exercise bands, mats & weights. Instructor: Josette Svitter Mondays & Wednesdays Jan. 9-April 26 (except March 27 & 29) 4:15-5pm in Riverview Fitness Center. Early fee: $86 (seniors $68) until Jan. 2, then $96, or attend any 15 classes for $49 (seniors $39).
  • Yoga Fitness: Level I. Learn basic poses in this beginner class. This is a great opportunity to give this healthful activity a try. Become more relaxed, more flexible and start to breathe more fully. Instructors: Judy Kraus Tuesdays Jan. 10-April 25 (except March 28) 6-6:45pm at Riverview Fitness Center. Early fee: $54 (seniors $43) until Jan. 2, then $64, or attend any 7 classes for $30 ($24).
  • PiYo: Fitness Level 1. This is a combination of Yoga and Pilates. PiYo is a total-body fitness system designed to work your entire body. It combines the practices of Pilates and Yoga to help build strength, lose weight, increase flexibility. Fun is always a part of exercise. Get your workout done before work! Instructor: Amy Odekirk Tuesdays & Thursdays Jan. 10-April 27 (except March 28 & 30) 5:15-6am in Riverview Fitness Center. Early fee: $86 (seniors $68) until Jan. 2, then $96, or attend any 15 classes for $49 (seniors $39).
  • POUND: Fitness Level 1. This class combines cardio, strength training and Pilates with drumming to achieve a full-body workout. Using lightly weighted drumsticks called RipstixTM, participants can burn 500-900 calories per class and perform over 15,000 reps per session! Instructor: Maggie Olson Wednesdays Jan. 11-Feb. 22 7-7:30pm in Riverview Fitness Center. Early fee: $15 (seniors $12) until Jan. 2, then $25.
  • Pilates: Fitness Level I. This course helps build strength and flexibility in the legs, abs, arms, hips and back. Breathing techniques will be used to relieve stress and bring more oxygen flow to the muscles. This Pilates experience will awaken your hidden muscles by making them long and lean. Instructor: Amy Butters. Thursdays Jan. 12-March 23 6-6:45pm in Riverview Fitness Center; early fee $32 (seniors $25) until Jan. 2, then $42. Or Fridays Jan. 13-March 24 6-6:45am in Riverview Fitness Center; early fee $32 (seniors $25) until Jan. 2, then $42.
  • Top Flight: Fitness Level 1-2. Class begins with a warmup and continues into aerobics, designed to strengthen the cardiovascular system. The mat work section of the class will shape and define arm, abdominal, thigh and hip muscles. Class concludes with stretching for flexibility. Your own mat is the only requirement. Instructor: Pat Moriarty 8-9am in Plymouth Youth Center Mondays & Wednesdays Jan. 9-April 26 (except March 27 & 29). Early fee: $86 (seniors $68) until Jan. 2, then $96, or attend any 15 classes for $49 (seniors $39).
  • Group Cycling MWF: Fitness Level 1-2. The combination of predominantly cycle riding with fitness training will increase energy levels for the rest of the day. Each class will start with 30 minutes of cycling followed by 15 minutes of strengthening. Instructor: John Pfankuch Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays Jan. 9-April 28 (except March 27-31) 5:15-6am in Riverview Fitness Center. Early fee: $145 (seniors $116) until Jan. 2, then $155, or attend any 23 classes for $86 (seniors $68).
  • Interval Training: Fitness Level 2. Utilize different intervals to achieve cardiovascular, strength and flexibility improvements. You will be guided through different exercises each class to find and achieve your own fitness goals. Classes will be held outside when weather permits. Instructor: Josette Svitter Mondays & Wednesdays Jan. 9-April 26 (except March 27 & 29) 5:15-6pm in Riverview Fitness Center. The following aquatic classes will meet from Jan. 9 to May 19 in the Plymouth High School pool:

  • Daytime Aqua (Deep only – Shallow is full): This class is excellent for flexibility, range of motion and muscle toning. Instructors: Beth Kerntke & Clayton Moore 7:45-8:30am Tuesdays & Fridays Jan. 10-May 19 (except April 7, 14). Early fee: 18 classes $71 (seniors $56) until Jan. 2; 36 classes $132 ($105) until Jan.
  • Aqua Fitness: This low- to medium-paced, shallow-depth workout focuses on flexibility, range of motion, muscle toning and stress relief. Perfect for those who are older, overweight, pregnant or beginning to exercise, and those with arthritis, fibromyalgia or other health concerns. Instructor: Beth Kerntke 7:15-8pm Tuesdays & Thursdays, Jan. 10-May 18 (except March 30; April 6). Early fee: 18 classes $71 (seniors $56) until Jan. 2; 36 classes $132 ($105) until Jan. 2.
  • 20/20: 20 minutes of high-powered & motivational shallow aerobics followed by 20 minutes of ab work. Your feet will be off the floor for long periods of time and you’ll use equipment. Instructor: Beth Kerntke 8:15-9pm Mondays & Wednesdays, Jan. 9-May 17 (except March 29; April 5). Early fee: 18 classes $71 (seniors $56) until Jan. 2; 36 classes $132 ($105) until Jan. 2.
  • In The Deep! This motivational class uses water resistance for a great workout. You must be comfortable in deep water. You can use noodles or cuffs. Instructor: Beth Kerntke 7:15-8pm Mondays & Wednesdays, Jan. 9-May 17 (except March 29; April 5) Early fee: 18 classes $71 (seniors $56) until Jan. 2; 36 classes $132 ($105) until Jan. 2.
  • Water Walking: This self-paced, self-directed class in shallow water is perfect for those with limited mobility. Just walk at your own pace! Held at the same time as In the Deep, so help is nearby. 7:15-8pm Mondays & Wednesdays, Jan. 9-May 17 (except March 29; April 5). Early fee: 18 classes $33 (seniors $26) until Jan. 2; 36 classes $54 ($43) until Jan. 2.
  • Lap Swim: Take in the benefits of regular exercise with low-impact lap swim. 8:15-9:15pm Tuesdays & Thursdays Jan. 10-May 18; 6-7am Wednesdays & Fridays Jan. 6-May 19 (except April 14); 7:30-8:30am Saturdays Jan. 14-May 20 (except Feb. 4, 11; April 15). Early fee until Jan. 2 (add $10 after that): Early morning (38x): $76 (seniors $60); Tuesday & Thursday eves (38x): $76 ($60); Saturday only (16x): $40 ($32); Unlimited (92x): $85 ($68).
