Two Plymouth High School students took second place at the recent Fox Valley Technical College Culinary Throwdown.
In the competition, held Dec. 2 at FVTC, teams of students were given two tables, two gas burners and one hour to prepare a chicken entrée along with a starch and vegetable and present them to judges.
PHS teammates Derek Schweiger and Eric Grauman made Pan-Fried Airline Chicken Breast with homemade marinara sauce, Napoleon Stack of Grilled Vegetables with a Basil Polenta Cake, and Asparagus Ribbon Salad with fresh turnips. Their menu included fresh baby turnips from the PHS school garden and fresh basil from the PHS Food Science & Agriculture Center.
The competing students are advanced culinary students in their second year of the nationally recognized ProStart program that is sponsored by the National Restaurant Association. This competition gives the students the opportunity to hone their skills before going on to the State ProStart competition in Milwaukee in March.
