Panther from PHS gym floor

PHS Artifact: Gym floor panther

NOTE: In honor of the 50th anniversary of Plymouth Comprehensive High School this year, we’re sharing images of objects in and around the school. If you know more about these artifacts, please contact Jamie Piontkowski at jpiontkowski@plymouth.k12.wi.us or 892-5068.

The panther on display outside the Plymouth High School pool balcony once was the centerpiece of the gym floor.

The image was painted on the original wood floor installed when PHS opened in 1966. When the floor was rebuilt in 2000, then-athletic director Mike Slagle could not bear to see the panther thrown away. So he had that section framed and hung in his office.

After Coach Slagle’s death in July 2015, the panther was moved into the hallway in his honor. It was unveiled Sept. 15, when the Mike Slagle Aquatic Center was dedicated.
