883 Law Enforcement Relationships

It is recognized that cooperation between school personnel and law enforcement agencies is necessary in order to effectively and efficiently carry out the responsibilities of both agencies.

It is also recognized that school personnel shall endeavor to conduct themselves in accordance with applicable laws so that the legal rights of students are not infringed upon. The school further encourages law enforcement officers to exercise all possible care to protect the rights of students.

When there is reason to believe that a violation of law has been committed on school premises, at any school sponsored function, or under the supervision of school personnel, the building Principal or designee shall notify the appropriate law enforcement agency immediately.

Advance parental notification is not required prior to the interview. School personnel in requiring a witness to be present during the interview shall use discretion. Parents must be notified subsequent to the interview by the building Principal unless he/she is aware that the law enforcement officer has already made such notification.
