Fourth-graders at Parkview Elementary School in Plymouth recently celebrated Lumberjack Day as a culminating activity to their study of Wisconsin history and the early years of the timber industry.
The students read the book “Journey Back to Lumberjack Camp” by J.L. Panagopoulos, where they learned about life in the 1800s lumberjack camps.
Then, on March 23, they had a chance to compare what they had learned about the past to the timber industry of today. Teachers Ken Dunbar and Andy Arentsen presented information on their work on timber-cutting crews and brought along modern protective gear and tools.
Students also listened to some Paul Bunyan tall tales, created lumberjack songs, and ate a flapjack meal prepared by their parents.
