Horizon Elementary School in Plymouth recently collected bags and boxes full of baby items for the Plymouth Food Pantry.

“Our student council is all about helping the community,” said Principal Todd Hunt. “Elementary kids love helping others.”

The project came about when a Horizon parent heard that the pantry was having a hard time filling requests for baby-related items, and approached Mr. Hunt.

Julie Carbaugh, a parent who helps with the Horizon Student Council, agreed to coordinate the effort. Student council members responded enthusiastically, and learned something along the way, Mr. Hunt said.

“The kids seem to learn some good leadership and team skills when they work together to help others,” he said.

In addition to Horizon students and staff, volunteers and families with children in the Mulberry Bush Child Care Center also contributed items to the drive, which ran from Nov. 7 to 23.

“There were about seven bags and boxes collected – things like baby food, bibs, sippy cups and lots and lots of diapers,” Mr. Hunt said.
